Drunk Elephant Sound is a 100% Aotearoa owned and operated Dubstep and afroBASS label.
Drunk Elephant was set up by Auckland based producer and DJ OoGuN, initially as a home for his dubstep productions. However, as dubstep grows in NZ, with increasing numbers of homegrown producers picking up the sound, Drunk Elephant’s mission is to find and encourage NZ dubstep producers by releasing their tunes. OoGuN’s weekly radio show (Drunk Elephant Sound System, BaseFM 107.3, Sundays 8-10pm) has been instrumental in gathering and broadcasting locally made dubstep music from producers such as PVans (Aquatic Lab), Dutty Ranks (also signed to WAR), LQue and JRed, Joint Forces, Undertow, Truth (Deep Medi) and of course OoGuN’s own productions.
In the first phase, Drunk Elephant functioned purely as an online, digital label. However in 2009, the label is being launched as a full entity with planned vinyl releases. The first vinyl release will be a limited edition 12” featuring OoGuN’s instrumental Burning Fire Dub b/w a Warrior Queen vocal version – both sides have been getting heavy play by major DJs including RSD, Roommate (Babylon System) and have been destroying the dance.
A lot of forthcoming Drunk Elephant releases have been aired on occasional mixes for dubstepforum (the last one got 300 downloads) as well as on a NZ Dubstep 60min mix by OoGuN for Red Bull Music Academy’s online radio station.
OoGuN:
OoGuN is a Nigerian producer and DJ who migrated to Auckland from Dalston, East London 6 years ago. Since moving to NZ, he has become one of the country’s top Dubstep DJs, regularly playing alongside international DJs including Pinch, Benga, Caspa. He also organised and promoted a 2009 tour by RSD and played main support on the gigs around New Zealand.
OoGuN’s sets are well known for being packed with exclusive dubs – his own productions being roadtested as well as exclusives from the likes of Argon Records (Tes La Rok, Babylon System, Cotti…), Roommate, DJG, Jazzsteppa, Mungo’s HiFi and many more.
